One of my favorite types of portraits are headshots. I am a big fan of Peter Hurley and his work. I really like his horizontal style and tight crops so I incorporate these concepts in some of my images. It used to be for modeling and acting portfolios, the vertical crop 8×10 on white or grey was standard. Now, more and more modeling headshots are horizontal. I think that bit of negative space really adds to the image and helps to pull the viewer into the subjects face. There’s a lot more to a good headshot than just the crop, lighting is paramount. A well lit image not only makes the image seem more three dimensional but it is absolutely essential to accent the positive and de-emphasize the negative.
